— a couple of CDs now suspended in front of my picture windows.
Good Morning All,
I woke up around 4:00 this morning with this thought in my head: “Wait a second, I wonder how many people on the Day Book list don’t know about Freerice.com.”
Here’s what Wikipedia says about it: "Freerice is an ad-supported, free-to-play website that allows players to donate to charities by playing multiple-choice quiz games. For every question the user answers correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated via the World Food Programme. The available subjects include English vocabulary (the original subject with which the game launched), ... pre-algebra, chemical symbols ..., English grammar, SAT, foreign language vocabulary for English speakers human anatomy, geography (flags of the world, world capitals, country identification, and world landmarks), the identification of famous artwork, literature, quotations, and world hunger. A user's total score is displayed as a mound of rice and the number of grains."
I play it once a week or so, usually the English vocabulary or identifying the paintings. It’s a win-win sort of thing. The questions are fun in and of themselves and every correct answer puts ten grains of rice in a wooden bowl for some hungry kid in Africa or India or somewhere.
I just now played the vocabulary, starting at level 1 and hoping to get to level 60. The words in the beginning are easy, but they get harder the higher you get. I got to level 43 before jeroboam tripped me. That dropped me back a level. I was, given the answer, a large wine bottle, and if I had kept playing I would have gotten the word again sooner or later. But by then I’d reached a thousand grains of rice, in about ten minutes, and I’m heading to Esther’s in a half hour or so to do some gardening, so I stopped.
There are schools in Africa, where each student has a period a day playing Freerice.com.
If you didn’t know about it, give it a try! You’ll probably like it.
Go Well and Stay Well,
Bhekaron
